A Feat of Ancient Engineering

Just a warning - Sarah is writing this post so that you don't have to put up with a long exclamation about the details of the amazing engineering that Doug would love to write. If you would like this version of the events send a comment and I am sure he will oblige, but be warned, I got a multi hour discussion on this... But to be fair they are amazing to see. Built right into the hillside, over 2000 years ago, the rice terraces are tiered to let water flow down and irrigate all of the rice fields.

The best ones to see were a hour tricycle ride and 2+ hour hike in over a mountain pass into a tiny village, Batad (a UNESCO world heritage site). The tricylce ride going there was very pleasent. The way home however was another story... It started to downpore, and by the time we were loaded into the tricycle and on our way we were going down the road that now more resembled a river! A bit sketchy in parts but our driver was amazing at keeping traction and not being swept over the side of the mountain!

But not listening to the literature about acclimatization we were hot, tired and a bit grumpy at lunch... and we still had to hike out, back up over the mountain saddle. So be warned, summer in Vancouver does not prepare you to hike for 5-6 hours in hot humid weather at altitude, or you might look like this...
