School

So, Doug's obviously been spending a lot of time at school and now that term 1 is done he has a bit of time to reflect on it before term 2 starts; so here's the reaction so far:

1) Amazing profs, my accounting prof won professor of the year at both Harvard and Stanford before coming to INSEAD, and a guy came to give a lecture on Asia Pac for 5 hours without notes and it was interesting.

2) Amazing people - the other students are incredibly diverse which makes things interesting and sometimes funny; The other day our Stats prof asked what we had done last class and a french guys said we had talked a lot of BS. He actually meant bias in decision making but the reaction from the prof was pretty funny. There are 72 nationalities on campus (amazing) and my working group has a Dutch consultant, an Isreali lawyer, a Filipino airline guy, a banker from Hong Kong and me. Makes for really interesting debates, picture trying to explain BC union issues to someone who doesn't understand the notion.

3) Busy - Not getting enough sleep in general, between classes, on-campus recruiting and job searching and general STUFF, I'm averaging about 5-6 hours a night most of the week, its like Strategy time at WPT but all the time...

4) Generally just really interesting and fun, lots of laughs, lots of interesting discussion, lots of social stuff.

The negatives? You know I don't like to talk about those, but the heat is getting to us, I have a Finance prof (from SFU ironically) who doesn't like to answer questions, and the campus shuts off the A/C late at night.

My day? On campus for 8, class and group meetings most of the day, rush home for dinner, rush back for recruiting event, do homework until 2, walk home. Sleep. All in all, so far so good.

Just finished Term 1 exams (P1) and we're headed for a hike in Thailand. It was a pretty tough exam period, 5 in three days, and people got progressively more overtired. I was more or less impossible to understand afterwards. Marking is done entirely on a bell curve, for example in Accounting last year someone flunked with a 78% because the average was so high. Anyways, sunk cost now, nothing we can do until results come out in November, heading out for a hike...

Sounds like things are going well Doug...
Of all the ppl from 2nd Mack I think I would have put you near the bottom of the list of those likely to survive on only 5 hrs of sleep a night!

Have a great hike!

Whoa. Do you get a long break, now?
Is the dutch guy stubborn?
And thanks for talking about the negatives, too- you're right, it's not really a Doug thing to do ;)
