Boating
We finished up our trip in Venice. Which Doug found a bit depressing - you could see the grandeur that once was, underneath the decay, but for the most part the buildings were cracked, needed a good painting and generally looked completely neglected. It was still an amazing place to go and see, completely unique.
After seeing the few sights and taking the boat ride down the grand canal all there is to do is wander around the little streets and shop. The whole place is set up for tourists to spend their money. So we started our Christmas shopping - although it is doubtful that the presents will make it to Canada since Sarah picked things that she would really like to keep instead.
Hiking
The next stop was Cinque Terre to do some hiking along the cliffs. After being delayed on Italian trains for a while we arrive to stay in a sleepy little village, Vernazza. Although at this time of year they were all sleepy little villages.
The first day we hiked north to the only town with a real beach where we had lunch and a swim before catching the train to head back.
The second day we took the train to the southern most village (a whole 10min trip!) and then hiked back to our village through the olive groves and along the cliffs.
They weren't long hikes so we also fit in a lot of relaxing with a siesta in the afternoons.
Roaming
Since it was Sarah's half term break (do they ever work more than 6weeks?) we took off with Doug's parents to visit Italy.
First stop - Rome and the
grandiose sights.
We had fantastic, warm weather and besides when going into St Peter's we were in shorts and t-shirts.
