Surprise!
And boy was it! Somehow Doug managed to plan and execute a surprise party for me without me even becoming suspicious; complete with home baked cake.
He started early on his planning, apparently organizing who was bringing what in early January (how did I not know?) The cake was baked at Joe and Caroline's while I though he was working on yet another ACF case (very believable). I have no idea when he managed to find time to get all the meat for the BBQ. And he lured me down to the BBQ pit with a big fat lie (I thought we were going to Chinatown for dinner).
Thanks to those who helped him pull off his caper, it was a great night.

The embassy have pulled a blinder and Sarah's now a Brit! (just have to learn to talk like one now...)
Bad Airlines and Good Furniture
I can't believe we forgot to write a post about this! We bought 2 pieces of antique furniture for ourselves for Christmas, I know silly - right? But the prices for antique Tibetan and Chinese furniture is so much lower here than at home, even after shipping costs it is still cheaper, and there is way more selection here.
Funny thing is that the purchase is now proving useful! For some reason the airlines have one set of baggage rules for to/from the Americas and another set for the rest of the world. So when we came we were allowed 2 pieces of check-in bags each weighing 32kg, now we are only allowed 1 piece each of 20kg! So we have more then double the amount of stuff then we are allowed to take on the plane. Here is where the new-old cabinets come in... since we are going to ship them (and that cost is based on size not weight) we are going to fill them with the things we don't need like scuba gear and hot weather clothes.
But still, I really don't understand the airlines' policies...
Kiteboarding 101
We went to Phuket this weekend to try to cram a 3 day learn to kite course in 2 days (with
KiteboardingAsia on Chalong Bay) - we almost made it but the wind did not cooperate and died on us both days at noon. Another half hour of wind would have seen us both up on boards and I am sure getting big air! But even with not great wind, we learnt how to fly the kite and did some body dragging behind it, the next step, popping up on a board. All we have to do is find another weekend where we can go and do it again...
Our Last Weekend In Singapore
We are hoping to be traveling the next couple of weekends so this was possibly our last weekend in Singapore - crazy eh?
So on Sat morning we headed to the zoo, which is supposedly world renowned. They have done a good job of it, just like the night safari it doesn't feel like the typical zoo with animals in cages. Their enclosures are much more natural looking the most and the animals look happier.
On Sun we headed to Pulau Ubin with friends Joe and Caroline for a bit of biking. Pulau Ubin is what they say Singapore used to be like before all of the development took over. It is a nice quiet village with fishermen everywhere, it feels more like Malaysia or Thailand then Singapore. It only took us the morning to ride around the entire island but it was a great escape from the city and much closer and cheaper then going somewhere.
