Half Birthday
We can't believe that 6 months has gone by already! Already weighing in at 16lbs we are hoping that he won't be too heavy for the sky cot at Christmas.
We spent the weekend in the New forest with Doug's parents who are over for a visit. We hadn't been down there before but now that we have we are definitely going again. It is fantastic; lots of nice flat trails for hiking/biking and the only traffic jams were caused by ponies on the road. We biked on Saturday along an old rail bed. Kian was too small to sit in the trailer so he laid across the seat instead with the vibration from the dirt track sending him to sleep. Then on Sunday we drove around to see more of the forest and stopped for a walk. There are trails everywhere and we are going to have to buy a map and get down there for another weekend before the weather gets yucky.
The next weekend we went out to Leeds Castle and enjoyed a nice sunny day wandering around the grounds before Doug's parents were off home again.
This is Going to be Messy
We gave Kian his first meal today... banana, pear, cheese and Weetabix. It was cute but we can see that after the 3rd or 4th time the 'cute' mess is no longer going to be cute anymore. Oh well, he will hopefully soon learn to get the food into his mouth.
We have decided to do
Baby Led Weaning - basically you skip all the puree stuff and jump straight to real foods with him feeding himself. You offer a variety of foods, you don't force them to eat anything, and the baby is supposed to eat what they want (they are supposed to instinctively choose the right foods that they need). The pros are not having to make special meals (he eats what we eat or at least tries to!), helps with dexterity faster, they learn about family meals right from the start and it supposed to have all kinds of long term healthy eating benefits. The cons are that it is very messy and until he gets more of the food into his mouth there is a bit of food waste - Sarah refuses to eat gummy banana and cheese. Don't know if we buy into the whole baby chooses the right stuff but we do like the idea of not having to make special food for Kian.
So Kian now sits at the head of our table in his new highchair. We got one which is made to not have a tray so that the Kian sits up at the table with us, we liked this idea but without a ledge like a tray, a lot of food ended up on the floor.
A Real Neighbourhood
Our neighbourhood is like one of those ones that you see in movies that take place in the 50's. Everyone knows each others names. People sit out in the green and socialize after work and on weekends The kids ride bikes all around or play cricket. People lend each other gardening tools (even more neighbourhoodie is that people offer their tools when they see you working). And to top it off today we had a neighbourhood BBQ.
